Morgan Freeman was born in Memphis, Tennessee on 1st June, 1937. His father Morgan Porterfield Freeman (1915 – 1961) was a barber and his mother Mamie Edna (1912 – 2000) was a teacher.
Morgan Freeman moved to different places as a child including Greenwood, Mississippi; Gary, Indiana; and finally settled in Chicago. He went to Broad Street High School. Morgan Freeman won a statewide drama competition at the age of 12.
After graduating from school in 1955, Freeman was offered a drama scholarship by Jackson State University. It was a partial scholarship which he didn’t accept. Freeman joined United States Airforce in 1955 and raised to the rank of Airman First Class (A1C).
In 1959, he left the Airforce and started taking acting classes at Pasadena Playhouse in Los Angeles. He also studied Theatre Arts at Loss Angeles City College.
